We’re looking forward to seeing you at Sale Leisure Centre to resume your swimming lessons from 3rd January in a pool we call the Club Pool. This pool is 22.86 x 9.14 metres in size with depths from 0.9 metres up to 1.8 metres. The Club Pool has been used for children learning to swim for more than 100 years. 

Your lessons will take place at the same time and with the same teachers – the only thing that will change is the location.   

You may find that your child is swimming in deeper water than they are used to, especially for those in the early stages.  We want to reassure you that our expert teachers are experienced at teaching children to swim at these facilities, and that we have often found deeper water builds water confidence and stamina quicker.

When you visit Sale Leisure Centre the changing rooms will be to the right of reception and include two areas of mixed family changing which have four cubicles as well as open changing areas with benches, pegs, three showers and toilet facilities. Where possible we recommend that you arrive swim ready and use easy to change clothes.  

After dropping your children off at the pool, parents and carers can watch their child’s swimming lesson from a balcony area above the pool.  Please be aware the balcony is very warm and there is no seating.

Altrincham Leisure Centre wet and dry change is configured differently to Sale Leisure Centre. Altrincham LC has a family/mixed change that is well used by swimming lesson customers and ahead of moving the swimming lessons from Altrincham, we have surveyed the customers of Altrincham to seek their view on how best to provide changing. The result was that 70% preferred mixed/family change.  

Since coming back from the pandemic, we have experienced an increasing number of requests from Sale Leisure Centre customers for village/family change and as a result, we are committed to a full review of the change facilities at Sale LC in January. 

Key to being able to change the configuration of changing provision at Sale, is whether we can provide an adequate dry change for men somewhere else in the centre. Currently the male dry and male wet change is in one location. 

Ahead of any possible change, we will survey the sale LC swimming lesson customers to seek the views of our customers about possible changes to the configuration of changing during programmed swimming lesson times.

We have spent the last few months trying to locate an alternative venue for our gymnastics and trampolining, both internally within the Trafford Leisure group, as well as external locations within the community. However, we have struggled to find a suitable alternative that would adequately house the scale of our programme and our equipment.  It is therefore with a heavy heart, and after much consideration, that we have made the difficult decision to pause Altrincham Leisure Centre’s gymnastics and trampolining programme during its 18 month closure. We understand you might be disappointed, and for this we are very sorry, but we do hope you can feel excited about the refurbishment. 

We know our team are vital to the successful reopening of move Altrincham and the delivery of this excellent programme, and this is why Trafford Leisure has made a commitment to retain our gymnastics and trampolining team as part of the Trafford Leisure family. Our Gymnastic and trampoline lead by Shonagh Strachan will be here to welcome you back in the Summer of 2024. 

As our memberships are valid across the Trafford Leisure sites, we encourage you to use these facilities where a variety of services including swimming, group exercise classes, and the gym are available to you. In addition, our live online workouts are still being provided via our Facebook pages where you can also access previous live classes. 

We have managed to relocate a number of your group exercise classes to Sale Leisure Centre. Please see your Trafford Leisure app for more details. 

The proposed plans for the rebranded move Altrincham do not contain squash courts and we are sorry that this may impact your use and enjoyment of the refurbished centre. Unfortunately we do not currently have any usable squash courts at Trafford Leisure’s other locations and we appreciate the loss of squash at Altrincham Leisure Centre may be disappointing to you. 

Alternative squash venues in the borough: 

Bowdon Squash Club (South Downs Road, Altrincham WA14 3DT) is a not-for-profit club. Its four squash courts can be booked up to three weeks in advance and it is open to members from 8:00 am to 9.30 pm.

BeActive Urmston (Kingsway Park, Urmston M41 7FJ) has four squash courts. It’s located just off the M60 motorway (junction nine) and offers ample free parking. Off Peak (Monday-Friday 08:00-17:00 and Saturdays) £7.50. Peak (Monday-Friday 17:00-21:00) £9.75. All courts are for 60 minutes and bookable on the hour.  Courts can be booked in person, online or over the phone.  All customers need to register on the membership system as a ‘bookings casual’, which you can do here: https://beactiveurmston.clubright.co.uk/register

Brooklands Health Club (Whitehall Road, Sale M33 3NL) has three squash courts and is run by Brooklands Sports Club. Details can be found here  https://www.brooklandssportsclub.co.uk/squash or call 0161 243 5100 for further information.  

Brooklands offers four men’s teams (Thursday nights in the North West Counties Squash League) and one ladies team (Monday nights in the Cheshire Ladies League). They also offer both junior and adult coaching, either on an individual or group level. New members of all standards and age groups are welcome. 

We recognise that you may still want to access physical activity during the period of refurbishment and encourage you to use the facilities at our other sites, where a variety of services including swimming, group exercise classes, racquet sports and the gym are available to you, at your discounted rate.
